Punda Maria lies in the northernmost part of Kruger, about 8 km from Punda Maria Gate according to the official page’s orientation text. The camp is in the Sandveld region, where springs and specialised plant communities shape the setting.
SANParks lists Punda Maria as a main rest camp. The page combines restaurant, shop, fuel, pool, laundry, communal facilities and a day-visitor area with northern wilderness-trail access.
The current activity list names guided walks, trained-guide game drives, the Paradise Flycatcher camp walk, the pre-booked Nyalaland Wilderness Trail and a bird hide overlooking the waterhole on the camping-site fence.
SANParks notes that game can be sparse in parts of the Sandveld, but records kudu, nyala, buffalo and Sharpe’s grysbok, with wild dog, elephant and lion also frequently recorded. The Mahonie Loop is identified as a strong place to look for the small suni antelope.
Punda Maria is in well-drained Sandveld with natural springs and complex plant communities. The official page names white syringa, mixed bushwillow, silver cluster-leaf, baobab, pod mahogany, sickle bush and weeping wattle, with sparse to moderate sweet grass.
The page lists reception information, public telephone, restaurant, cafeteria, shop, mini ATM in the restaurant, laundromat, filling station, communal kitchens and ablutions, basic first aid, a day-visitor picnic area near the gate and cellular reception. It currently notes that the swimming pool is inaccessible during major renovation work.
The Punda Maria Gate approach follows the N1 to Polokwane, R524 through Makhado and approximately 140 km toward the gate. SANParks places Punda Maria Rest Camp 10 km from the gate and estimates five to six hours from central Gauteng to the gate.
Check the current pool-renovation notice and pre-booked Nyalaland arrangements before travel. The official page separates the camp bird hide from picnic facilities at Pafuri and Babalala, so do not merge those locations into the camp description.
