Mpumalanga’s largest provincial game reserve, combining high grassy mountains, savanna, river valleys, biodiversity, archaeology and rustic Kromdraai Camp.
Mpumalanga Tourism describes Songimvelo as a 48,000-hectare provincial reserve with exceptionally high plant diversity, dramatic mountain and valley scenery and rustic accommodation at Kromdraai Camp. It is a protected-area destination under Wild Frontier, not a town and not a replacement for the Mountainlands or UNESCO nodes.
Named reserve features include Kromdraai Camp, the Komati River, a streamside picnic area and the reserve's mountain, gorge and valley scenery. MTPA also lists game drives, self-drives, 4x4 trails, bush walks, hiking, birding, a pool area and tented camping; verify which facilities and activities are operating before travel.
Songimvelo's heritage layer includes geological and archaeological interest, with South African Tourism referring to rock paintings and archaeological remains in the wider reserve landscape. Such sites are protected evidence, not souvenirs: do not publish exact sensitive locations or invite visitors to touch, climb or remove material.
The official activity list supports game drives, self-drives, 4x4 trails, hiking and bush walks along the Komati River. These are terrain- and weather-dependent, and access to different sectors may require a suitable vehicle, guide, booking or permission; never treat the list as an unconditional same-day programme.
MTPA records savanna plains, high grassy mountains, rolling hills, valleys and gorges, more than 1,400 known plant species, 73 mammal species and four of the Big Five. These are reserve-level records, not sighting guarantees; wildlife remains wild and plant, trail and fire conditions change.
Songimvelo can support family learning through birding, track-and-sign observation, river ecology and careful reading of mountain geology. Keep children with adults and guides, respect braai and picnic rules, and use the reserve as a place to observe rather than feed animals, collect plants or approach wildlife.
MTPA publishes reservations contacts, coordinates, accommodation descriptions and activity information, but rates and operations can change. Confirm the current gate, route, booking, vehicle requirements, water and fuel plan, weather, cellular coverage, emergency arrangements and any seasonal closures directly with MTPA.
Songimvelo is the large provincial wilderness anchor south of Barberton and close to the Wild Frontier's ancient mountain story. Cross-link it to Barberton, the Makhonjwa landscape and Mountainlands, but retain its own reserve management, Kromdraai accommodation and access information.
